When Ms. Mar said she was going to tell me a story about making taco, my mouth started watering. I’m always ready for a good beef, chicken or fish taco. But then she said, “no, not taco . . . tako.” What the heck is tako? Well, I was about to find out.

“4, 3, 2, 1 and BOOM, a canon blast starts the race. Fireworks are going off. This is it. This is my final exam. Did I train enough? Will I make it? For some reason, I have Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5 Finalerunning through my head.   Must be a throwback from my music days in high school and college.

Honolulu Marathon Start

“It seems like forever before I am able to move. The race is already 2 minutes old before I am even able cross the starting line. With so many people surrounding me, I am unable to do anything but walk for the first few minutes. As the swarm of people starts to disburse, I am finally able to start a slow jog, and then a slow run. I try to keep my breathing even and my pace steady. I was about to experience something few people have only to ponder. I was about to experience both agony and the thrill of living.  I was about to experience the fear of having to go to the bathroom! HawaiiMs. Mar loves to tell stories about when she made the adventurous move from a small town in northern Minnesota to a small island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean – Hawaii – way back in 1974. Of course, this was long before I was ever thought of, or my mother was thought of, or her mother . . . you get the gist. I was not yet in existence when this move occurred so I can only tell her stories.

While she intended to stay in Hawaii only for a year until she figured out what she wanted to do “when she grew up,” Ms. Mar ended up staying for 25 years and during that time had many great adventures. Over the next few weeks, I’ll tell you some of her stories.
